I had a whole other post to put up tonight, but that’s gonna go up later. I just got word that a part of my childhood died tonight.
We lost Chris Kelly (right), one half of the iconic 90s rap duo Kris Kross tonight. He was only 34 years old. The cause of death is unknown, but rumors have been circulating for years that he’d been battling an illness for quite some time now. To say that I’m shocked is an understatement.
I was a HUGE Kris Kross fan growing up. I had the videos recorded on VHS, the special tape they’d made surrounding their hit single, “Jump,” and being in the limelight. I had posters galore (including the one in the photo). I think I still have news articles on them from some of my favorite magazines. I owned all their albums (my favorite was “Da Bomb,” though my favorite song was “Macking Ain’t Easy” off their third album, “Young, Rich and Dangerous.”)
I remember seeing them in concert when I was 11, pants on backwards and everything. I was elated. To this day, I remember the laser show with their images. I remember them peeking from behind the curtains to wave to their fans long before the show even started. I was a true fan.
My heart goes out to Kelly’s family and friends, especially the remaining member, Chris Smith. They were friends since the 1st grade. I know this hurts his heart.
See you later, Chris Kelly. We’re all going to miss you.
